비디오 게임 유통사인 빅벤 인터랙티브(Alain Falc, CEO)는 한국 자동차 산업의 주축을 담당하고 있는 현대 자동차와 2017 e스포츠 WRC 챔피언십에 대한 정식 파트너십을 체결했다. 이 대회의 명칭은 현대 자동차가 후원하는 “e스포츠 WRC”로 명명되었으며, 글로벌 대회는 FIA 월드랠리챔피언십 공식 게임인 WRC 6에서 열릴 것이다.

WRC에서 2년 연속으로 3개의 팀을 운영하고 있는 현대 자동차는 빅벤 인터랙티브와 함께 e스포츠 WRC에서 20,000유로에 해당하는 프리미엄 현대 i20을 우승 상품으로 지원하는 것에 대해 자랑스럽게 생각한다며 소감을 밝혔다.

현대 자동차는 환상적인 신세대 월드랠리카로 2017년에도 도전을 이어나갈 전망이다. 현대 i20 쿠페 WRC는 로드카의 380HP 버전으로 4초 내에 60mph의 속도를 낼 수 있으며, 2014년부터 챔피언십에 복귀하며 3번째로 선보인 주요 월드랠리카이기도 하다.

현대 자동차 해외 마케팅 그룹 책임자인 Scott Noh는 “첫 파트너십 이후로 e스포츠 WRC 어드벤처에 다시 함께 할 수 있게 되어 무척 흥분됩니다”라며 소감을 밝혔다. 이어서 그는 “e스포츠 WRC 챔피언십은 WRC를 사랑하는 전세계 사람들이 실제 공식 랠리와 아주 유사한 온라인 랠리에 참가할 수 있는 완벽한 방법입니다. 작년에는 수천명의 온라인 드라이버들이 모여 1년간 대회를 치렀고, 최종적으로 웨일즈에서 라이브 이벤트가 열렸었습니다. 새로운 방식으로 진행되는 올해의 챔피언십에서 드라이버들을 예의주시하는 것은 매우 흥미로운 일이 될 것이며, 이미 시상대 앞에서 치열한 전투가 벌어지고 있는 모습을 보이는 것 같기에 앞으로가 더 기대됩니다”라며 기대감을 표했다.

2017년 e스포츠 WRC는 현실의 WRC를 모방한 새로운 방식으로 진행된다. 플레이어들은 각 라운드에서 포인트를 획득해야 하며, 최종 선발된 8명의 드라이버는 현대 i20 쿠페 로드카를 두고 혈전을 벌이게 된다.

빅벤 인터렉티브의 소프트웨어 부서 책임자 Benoit Clerc는 “현대 자동차와 2년 연속으로 파트너십을 체결해 최고의 온라인 경험을 플레이어들에게 제공할 수 있게 되어 자랑스럽습니다”, 이어서 “현대 자동차는 모터 스포츠, 특히 WRC에 참여함으로써, 그들이 이루어낸 혁신과 성과가 자신들의 DNA임을 증명해냈고, 이렇게 앞서 나가는 의욕적인 회사와 함께 하는 것은 필수라고 생각합니다”라고 서술했다.
